When an inmate gets out of jail, he or she faces numerous challenges trying to get his or her life back together. Through a collaborative effort of the Cranberry Country Clergy, the state Department of Corrections and the Wood County Sheriff's Department, authorities are putting a program in place they hope will reduce the number of inmates who end up back in jail after they're released. Life Changes will pair inmates with a team of four to six volunteer mentors who will provide the inmates with needed support to succeed once they leave jail, said the Rev. Vicki Natzke, one of the program organizers. The teams will help participants connect with established programs to get help with things such as shelter, employment and counseling. "We believe in second chances. We believe in redemption and forgiveness," Natzke said. "With the help of people from our area, jail inmates will have to make their own decisions on how they're going to live their life." Cranberry Country Clergy is a group of local churches that have been working together to improve the lives of inmates, Natzke said. About a year ago, members decided they wanted to create a mentoring program for the Wood County Jail but didn't know how to do it. Natzke was at the Wisconsin Council of Churches Circle of Support when she learned of a similar program in Madison. Read More. |
