OKLAHOMA CITY — About 4,700 Department of Corrections employees will begin taking furlough days in March, the department's director said Monday. "That assumes there is no special session or we get no relief in regular session," Director Justin Jones said. The furloughs apply to all employees, including corrections officers, he said. Employees making $50,000 a year or more will take 12 furlough days between March and June, Jones said. Employees making less than $50,000 a year will be required to take 10 furlough days. State agencies have been told to cut their budgets by 5 percent through the end of the 2010 fiscal year, which is June 30. "By state statute, we can only do 23 furlough days in any 12-month period," he said. "We have to reserve furlough days for the 2011 budget, also." Jones said morale among employees is better than expected in light of the furlough days. Employees previously have been required to take furlough days when revenue dropped, he said. "In this economy, sometimes the blessing is the fact you have a job," Jones said. Read More. |
