November 10, 2009 (CHICAGO) (WLS) -- The first of nearly 1,000 Illinois prisoners went home Tuesday night as part of an early release plan to save the cash-strapped state millions of dollars.

Inmates involved in the early release are non-violent offenders who will serve the remainder of their sentences at home on electronic monitoring.

Gov. Pat Quinn says he knows he will face criticism if any of these inmates commit crimes. The governor says the electronic detention of these inmates will save the state $5 million a year.

It costs the state an average of $24,000 a year to feed, guard and house an inmate.

When the story first hit the news I believe near the end of September, it was stated that the Governor planned to release 1000 from Illinois prisons in the weeks to come. Information at that time was very vague and didn't give a "real" timeline for this to take place. I thought, how wonderful because my husband is incarcerated with less than 4 months to go on his sentence and he meets the criteria for early release. (at least according to the DOC website) In fact, over a month ago, he signed paperwork for an electronic monitor. Well......it's now November and he still sits in limbo. None of the counselors at his facility are willing to share any information regarding the process for early release?? So basically, you have to rely on the news agencies to give you any updates on what is happening. My area of Central Illinois has 4 different news agencies that are reporting 4 different stories about the early release program? Now, WLS in Chicago is reporting that all of the inmates will come from Adult Transition Centers?? My husband is at a High-Medium facility and if this is true, he would not be eligible. Why wasn't that reported from the beginning before the hopes of inmates and families were affected?? Why is the public receiving information piece meal? Not expecting any answers.......just venting because this is quite frustrating.
