A 35-year-old Cumberland County (N.J) Jail inmate was in stable condition Monday, one day after jumping from the second floor of his housing pod, Warden Glenn Saunders said. The inmate, whose name was not released, suffered a compound fracture to his left arm and a fractured left orbital bone, Saunders said. After being taken to South Jersey Healthcare-Bridgeton Hospital shortly after the incident, the Pleasantville man was airlifted to Cooper Hospital/University Medical Center in Camden. Authorities were still investigating the incident Monday afternoon, but believed no foul play to be involved. "It was witnessed by the officer on duty, plus other inmates witnessed it," said Saunders. "We had no indication that (the inmate) was going to do anything like this. I don't think there was any way of preventing this." No statement has been taken from the inmate because of his condition, Saunders said. "My main concern right now is his medical condition," he said. "We'll assess him when he returns." A nurse with the jail responded immediately, along with other corrections officers and members of the Bridgeton Emergency Ambulance Association. Two officers are stationed at the hospital to guard the inmate at all times. The inmate has been incarcerated at CCJ without bail since Dec. 19, 2003 on a parole violation and theft charge, according to jail documents. |
