| Forum addresses pipeline to prison |

A forum ended with five groups of educators, politicians, community activists, parents and others brainstorming to figure out ways black students can be more successful in school and avoid contact with the judicial system. "Arresting Development: Schools to Prison Pipeline" was attended by more than 100 people who broke into groups to come up with a list of reasons that cause students to fail in school and end up in the criminal justice system while also highlighting things that can be done to prevent youngsters from entering the judicial system. The forum was held at the downtown Alachua County Library Headquarters. One group said some of the causes that lead youngsters to crime include poverty, a lack of affordable social activities, early failure in school and limited access to vocational education programs. Another group said parents can help their youngsters succeed in school by taking advantage of all of the community resources available to them, and other groups said school curriculums need to be expanded and more role models and volunteers are needed, in addition to more parent and community involvement.
