Not all women in law enforcement drive a squad car. While women are slowly gaining in numbers on patrol, they`re already just about equal in numbers with men in one area, the Department of Corrections. Whether these women work with inmates before they`re released, or supervise them once they`re out of jail, their jobs are very different from what patrol officers do. Shannon Davison comes from a family firmly entrenched in law enforcement. "Overall, I was very interested in helping people," says Davison. "Everybody needs help. It`s a self gratifying thing when you`re there to help someone." Her job at the Missouri River Correctional Center is to help inmates prepare for a transition back into society. "Almost all offenders do enter back into the community," she says. "I think it`s about 97 percent. So they are within our daily population, whether they`re in incarceration or our community."
