Brenda Benner and Rebecca Keister were walking back to work from the post office yesterday when things got chaotic in front of Mama's Pizza.
As the women watched, a prisoner being driven to the Perry County Prison two blocks away attacked and overpowered his constable escort, then threw him from his vehicle and drove away, police said. The escape sparked a manhunt that continued at press time last night along the Cumberland-Perry
Trooper Kristal Turner-Childs, spokeswoman for state police Troop H, announced at 6:50 p.m. that the hunt for Ronald Eugene Wolf, 35, of the 1900 block of Swatara Street, Harrisburg, was being scaled back but that some officers would search through the night.
Turner-Childs said police believed Wolf had slipped beyond the search perimeter, possibly before police established it.
Police said Wolf threw Constable Glenn Masser of Herndon RR 1 from Masser's vehicle around 12:20 p.m. at South Carlisle and McClure streets as Masser was returning Wolf to the county prison from an arraignment in Sunbury. Police said Wolf was being held in the prison on burglary charges.
Wolf ditched Masser's vehicle, police said.
Police from Perry, Cumberland and Dauphin counties, joined by the state police Special Emergency Response Team, dogs and a helicopter, searched for several hours along Route 850 and over the mountain into Cumberland County.
