Two officers at the Perry Correctional Institution near Pelzer, Fla., have been stabbed as they tried to remove an inmate from his cell for a shower, prison officials say. The officers were taken to a hospital and were in stable condition Wednesday, a statement by the Corrections Department said. Their names were not released. The inmate, Travis Chavis, 23, is serving a 16-year sentence from Clarendon County for taking hostages by inmates, criminal conspiracy, carrying a prohibited weapon, assault and battery with intent to kill, kidnapping, escape, grand larceny and receiving stolen property, the agency said. Chavis began his sentence in 1999, records show. Perry is a high-security prison designed primarily to house violent offenders with longer sentences. The inmate was being removed from his cell for his shower at about 2:20 p.m. Wednesday when he "lunged through the door and began to stab the correctional officers," the statement said. Officials would not say what kind of weapon was used. |
