Two officers and three inmates at the Maryland Correctional Institution-Hagerstown were treated at an area hospital after suddenly becoming sick, a state Division of Correction spokeswoman said Thursday. They were treated late Wednesday at Washington County Hospital and released, said Capt. Priscilla Doggett. The officers and inmates apparently drank iced tea tainted "with some sort of chemical," Commissioner of Correction Frank Sizer said. The five experienced stomach cramps and vomiting shortly after the tea was served at 10 p.m. Sizer said the division's internal investigation unit is looking into how the chemical got into the drink, including the possibility that foul play was involved. A hospital spokeswoman declined to comment, saying she could not provide information on unidentified patients. |
