And the governor said she is pushing for Willard Warren Jr. and 19 other inmates to follow parole standards, including post-release supervision. The move immediately drew fire from the state appellate defender who called it political posturing. “They, in essence, are continuing to attempt to defy the rule of law,” said attorney Staples Hughes, who brought the case that almost forced the release of the inmates. “It has long since ceased to be a legal issue. It is simply a political issue and a mechanism for the governor to use to attempt to raise her popularity.” The inmates had been scheduled for release Oct. 29 after the state Supreme Court ruled that credit for good behavior had cut their 80-year life sentences in half.
