| Long-term contracts for prison health care carry too many risks |

Delaware's dilemma with prison health care continues to be a perplexing conundrum that has forced the federal government to monitor the state's operations. Department of Correction Commissioner Carl Danberg at least has taken up action on the matter with his announcement that the contract for prison health care will be bid out on 10 different levels instead of giving it all to one operating agency. Or maybe not. Commissioner Danberg has already announced that the contract with Correctional Medical Services (CMS) of St. Louis will not be renewed come June 30. That was the first necessary step in addressing the problems. The News Journal's investigative reporters in 2005 found evidence of myriad medical problems and high inmate death rates, especially from AIDS and suicides. News stories also reported instances of poor medical care, for cancer, meningitis, hepatitis and bacterial infections. It was then that the federal officials intervened and warned the state that it needed to get its prison health care back on track. If the state does not meet its deadline by next month -- which appears highly unlikely -- the federal government can either extend the agreement or sue to take over the prisons. Read More. |
