| Prison bill now closer to vote in Assembly |

Legislation aimed at lowering the number of people returning to prison is under consideration in the state Assembly. A package of four bills would allow former inmates to receive financial help from state welfare programs, encourage the corrections system to place prisoners in facilities close to their families and seek ways to maintain bonds between incarcerated parents and their children. One of the laws would require inmates to finish high school classes and receive vocational training. Assemblywoman Bonnie Watson Coleman (D-Mercer), who is spearheading the initiative, said the constant flow of former inmates back to prison is a "disgraceful and destructive cycle." The package of bills passed the Assembly Law and Public Safety Committee by a partisan vote Monday, with four Democrats in favor and two Republicans against. The legislation already has received a nod of approval from Speaker Joseph Roberts (D-Camden), who agreed to bring it to the floor for a vote. Read More. |
