| DCCI Inmates To Be Our Firefighters |

Decatur County Commissioners approved the Department of Corrections Inmate Firefighter program on Tuesday evening. In a few short months, Decatur County should have 4 manned fire stations in the county. Presently, the only manned station is at the Decatur County Industrial Park on Highway 27 north. Decatur County Correctional Institute Warden Elijah McCoy (at left), Fire Chief Charlie McCann and Chief Sylvester Hall Jr, the Georgia Department of Corrections Director of Fire Services presented the program to Commissioners at a work session. Commissioners approved the program at Tuesday's Commission meeting. Warden Elijah McCoy told Commissioners that 29 inmates have signed up to participate. They must first go through the Georgia Work Ready program offered at the college and Warden McCoy will then choose 10 inmates for the program. Those 10 inmates that will go to the Terrell County Prison for 6 weeks of training and then go to the State Fire Academy in Forsyth, Ga and pass the required firefighters test. Read More. |
