| Jail inmate's apparent suicide prompts investigation |

BLOOMINGTON — The death of a McLean County jail inmate who apparently suffocated himself with a plastic bag has prompted an investigation that will include a review of the case by the Illinois Department of Corrections. Christopher T. Berry, 26, of Hudson was found dead about 9 p.m. Saturday in his cell by three inmates who noticed a blanket covering Berry’s cell bars and the inmate inside with a plastic bag over his head, according to McLean County Sheriff Mike Emery. The inmates, who were in a dayroom area of the cellblock, alerted jail staff, he said. “Everything surrounding this incident will be reviewed,” said Emery, adding that Berry did not show signs that he might harm himself. The sheriff’s office and DOC each will investigate, he said. Berry’s uncle, Doug Emberton, described his nephew Tuesday as someone with a troubled past who was trying to turn his life around. “He was a good kid. He was trying to change his life and get things straightened out,” Emberton said. McLean County Coroner Beth Kimmerling said she is waiting for toxicology results and investigative reports from the sheriff’s department before making a ruling on the cause of death, but foul play is not suspected.
