| Bipartisan panel sought to study possible prison sale |

SPRINGFIELD - -- House Republicans on Friday called for a special committee to study the state's potential sale of a northwest Illinois prison to the federal government to house terrorism suspects now held at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. The request, contained in a letter by House Republican Leader Tom Cross of Oswego, surfaced as a key state lawmaker wants to fast-track public hearings on the sale of Thomson Correctional Center. Earlier this week, Gov. Pat Quinn's administration filed its recommendation for closing the prison, setting up the hearings. Cross called on House Speaker Michael Madigan, D-Chicago, to establish a bipartisan committee to help address topics ranging from safety and security to how many jobs would be created and how much the federal government would pay Illinois for the prison.
