ADOPT-A-VILLAGE ‘WALL OF GIFTS’

Each year the inmates’ Native Culture Club raises funds to purchase gifts for a rural community selected by the club members. This year the inmates raised over $10,000. These gifts are stacked along a wall of the facilities gymnasium through Thursday, Dec. 3. This year the club selected the Inupiat village of Elim (pop. 341), located on the coast of the Seward Peninsula, and the Interior village of Tetlin (pop. 136). Among the items purchased are new uniforms for school basketball and volleyball teams. Inmates have also raised a little over $1,500 to purchase caps, mittens and scarves for seniors in the Mat-Su Valley. The effort is through the “Santa Cop program” sponsored by the Palmer Police Department.
