NEWARK (AP) — A New Jersey convicted murderer has won a settlement that allows him to preach during prison services. Howard Thompson Jr., who is serving 30 years to life for felony murder and robbery at the New Jersey State Prison, had been conducting weekly worship services until 2007, when prison officials ordered him to stop. The American Civil Liberties Union filed a federal lawsuit on Thompson’s behalf seeking to restore Thompson’s preaching privileges, arguing that ending them restricted his religious freedom. Thompson entered the facility in 1986. As an ordained Pentecostal minister, 45-year-old Thompson started preaching and running Sunday services more than a decade ago, according to the lawsuit. He also taught Bible study classes and founded a prison choir. The settlement applies only to Thompson and allows him to deliver sermons and morning messages under the supervision of a chaplain or approved volunteer. Read More. |
