Corrections center opens new classroom

Offenders hoping to make a better life for themselves will have a little more space to take classes, as a result of a new multi-use classroom that was opened Monday.

The classroom was opened at the Lafayette Parish Sheriff Office's Community Corrections Center and will be used for literacy and GED-preparation classes.

The new building was almost entirely built by inmate labor, Community Corrections Manager Pam Justice said.

"The use of inmate labor reduces the cost of construction," she said, adding that it provides training to the inmates involved.

Classroom size at the center that offers an alternative to incarceration has swelled to between 30 and 50 students.

The rooms were so full that sometimes clients would take a test, while others were sitting in a GED class and still others were working on literacy.

The number of people being served at the Community Corrections Center has doubled in the last year, something that is attributed to the growth of the parish.
