Two prison officers were injured when inmates at the Saskatchewan Penitentiary refused to go back to their cells last Friday. The officers were treated at the federal prison for minor injuries and sent home, Shawn Bird, co-ordinator of correctional operations, said. He said the officers were injured at the beginning of the disturbance, which started about 4 p.m. last Friday afternoon. Bird said the officers were involved in an "intervention" with one inmate when they got hurt. He wouldn't explain further. The disturbance involved 10 maximum-security prisoners and was limited to one range, he added. The prison currently houses 503 inmates. The RCMP are investigating to determine whether charges will be laid. The Correctional Service of Canada will also conduct an investigation. |
