CHOCOLAY TOWNSHIP -- The former Mangum Prison Farm, now the Marquette County Community Corrections Detention Center, has been housing inmates for four months, and according to the Sheriff's Office, so far, so good at the new facility. "We're doing well. We got programs started for them. Great Lakes Recovery comes out and does programs for them; AA, they have church groups," explained Deputy Jason Kangas of the Marquette County Sheriff's Office. Deputy Kangas tells me that the 15 men currently housed at the detention center all have a daily schedule to follow: up at 0600 (6 a.m.), in bed by 2300 (11 p.m.), with work time, rec. time and food time in between. But both inmate behavior and morale are good. "I would say probably 80 percent of them are happier to be here. There's more things to do here. They can go outside. There's a little more area to move around. They can wear their street clothes out here for the most part. So there's a little more freedom out here compared to the County Jail," Kangas said.
