A distraught Amanda Knox cried herself to sleep and was comforted by her cell mates at the weekend as she began a 26-year prison sentence for the murder of Meredith Kercher. The 22-year-old American spent much of yesterday and Saturday in floods of tears, being offered words of reassurance from women prisoners and worrying about the impact of her 26-year jail sentence on her family, her lawyers said. Italian jails are packed with foreigners, many of them illegal immigrants, and Knox's cellmates are representative of the cosmopolitan prison population - they come from China, Kosovo and Romania. The jury in the trial handed down its verdict just after midnight on Friday and Knox's cellmates waited up for her return from the courthouse in Perugia, handing her a glass of warm milk to try to calm her nerves. "Amanda spent the night in her cell being comforted by her cellmates," said one of her lawyers, Luciano Ghirga. "She was up most of the night, crying. She is depressed and disappointed. She was very tired and worried about the impact the sentence will have on her parents and sisters." After the verdict, her stepmother Cassandra said Knox had told her family before her court appearance on Friday she expected to be acquitted so she could take the first plane home to Seattle with her family. I sincerely believe that Amanda Knox is not guilty of the crime of murder--and I believe this is a travesty of justice in the Italian court system--what their judicial system says of them is that they are unfair and unjust in their deliberation system and the parents need to appeal to every avenue available including the current Pope in Rome!! Hilary Clinton needs to find time to get involved and Barack Obama with his powers needs to see to it that Amanda Knox is freed! Shame on Italy for this politically motivated judgement!
