Gov. Pat Quinn’s plan to release 1,000 inmates from targeted Illinois Department of Corrections facilities is irresponsible and misleading. There is no real savings because there are always felons who are waiting to take the released inmates’ places. In addition, other costs like medical care continue to rise so the prediction of “hard dollars” savings is purely political and a ploy to look like something is being done. I suggest the following: The state has thousands of acres adjacent to or near many correctional centers. Sell this land. Get rid of the state-assigned vehicles to the wardens and other management personnel. They can drive their own cars to work like the rest of the staff. Reduce central office staffing to pre-Snyder years. There is still a glut of staff at the Concordia complex. Close the Stateville Correctional Center as it is too costly to renovate. Stop all of the “photo-op” pre-release programs and increase post-release programming. Parole School is the only realistic program. Read More. |
