| Inmate dies at Scotland Correctional Institution |

LAURINBURG - A corrections officer found inmate Daniel Parnell (#0651385) unresponsive in his cell during a routine check today at 5:00 a.m. Prison medical staff and local EMS responded promptly. Efforts to revive Parnell, 31, were unsuccessful. His body was transported to the state medical examiner for autopsy. The Scotland County Sheriff’s Department is conducting an investigation into the circumstances of Parnell’s death. A cause of death is unknown at this time. Parnell was serving a 12-15 year sentence for second degree murder, larceny, and breaking and entering He was convicted in Robeson County in January 2007 and was housed in the prison’s regular population. Scotland Correctional Institution is a high-security prison near Laurinburg housing approximately 950 adult male inmates. |
