This time fight involves lowest security inmates Correctional officers at Pelican Bay State Prison used pepper spray to help break up a large-scale fistfight among some of the facility’s lowest-security inmates Friday. The incident, which occurred in a dormitory outside the maximum security perimeter that houses some of the state’s most dangerous and disruptive criminals, started when two Level 1 inmates began fighting, prompting a melee involving 17 others. Pelican Bay’s public information officer, Lt. Ken Thomas, said Monday the fight between white and Hispanic inmates was broken up in a matter of minutes and it’s still unclear how many of the 19 individuals were actually engaged in the scuffle. “It appears we had a disagreement, but we’re looking into what caused it,” Thomas said Monday about the prison’s investigation. “Hopefully, this was an isolated incident.” No weapons were used in the fight, and the only reported injuries were minor cuts and bruises to the inmates. Fights at Pelican Bay State Prison are a part of life. Inside the maximum security confines of the prison, a significant portion of the inmates are serving life sentences and were sent to the facility because they were considered to be too raucous or violent to be housed anywhere else.
