| Michigan prison halts work crews; corrections union seeks change in policy |

Corrections Officer Sam Olivo was not armed Tuesday as he supervised five prisoners clearing brush and debris from a Montcalm County drain. By policy, the 22-year veteran carried no weapon, officials said, because potentially it could be taken by a prisoner. One of the prisoners from the Carson City Correctional Facility attacked Olivo and then drove away in the van with the other four locked in the back, police said. They were later taken back into custody 70 miles away, near Eaton Rapids. Crews suspended Olivo, a 55-year-old St. Johns resident, was in stable condition Wednesday at Sparrow Hospital.
