The housing unit was evacuated and the inmates have been moved to another location. Officials insist that the inmates are secure and there were no security breaches.

No injuries or escapes have been reported.

The fire broke out shortly after 8 p.m. Sunday at the federal prison at Boulevard and McDonough Boulevard, Atlanta Fire Capt. Jolyon Bundrige said.

Firefighters arrived and found smoke poring from the west end of the facility. They immediately raised the call to a three-alarm fire, summoning a total of 65 firefighters, Bundrige said.

Interior sprinklers and water pipes helped firefighters quickly get the fire under control and contained to the single housing unit.

"There are some challenges," Bundrige said, referring to the prison security. "But we got it under control."
