A N.J. prison officer took his ex-girlfriend hostage last Friday before killing her and committing suicide, authorities said. Alfred Ritzler, 46, of Millville, a corrections officer at Southern State Correctional Facility, went to a house in search of Donna Weigand, 41, with whom he had recently split. Ritzler, who was armed with a revolver, found her with a man she has been dating. A 911 call was received by the Lower Township police about 8 a.m., but dispatchers could only hear the voice of a woman yelling "Put the gun down," according to police Capt. Edward Donohue. Donohue, one of the first officers at the scene, said they were met by James Windisch, 40, of Langhorne, Pa., as Windisch ran from the three-story house owned by Weigand's parents on Fishing Creek Road. Windisch was initially subdued, until he told officers it was Ritzler who had the gun and was still inside, authorities said. After hearing gunshots, SWAT teams from the State Police, the Atlantic City Police Department and Lower Township were summoned during what became a six-hour standoff, Donohue said. "The whole time, we were trying to get him on the phone or communicate with him," he said. Finally, a robot equipped with a camera was placed in the door of the home and captured video of the bodies of Ritzler and Weigand, Donohue said. Ritzler, an officer at the Leesburg prison for 20 years, worked with the facility's special operations unit and was popular among other officers, according to Matthew Schuman, a spokesman for the state Department of Corrections. The weapon was one of Ritzler's, not a state-issued weapon, Schuman said. |
