| Study finds decline in number of inmate deaths |

The number of inmates who died in California prisons dropped from 2006 to 2008 - but the number of deaths that might have been prevented increased, according to a report released Monday by the federal receiver overseeing the state's prison health system. Some of the inmates whose deaths might have been prevented died of such problems as cancer, heart attacks, pneumonia and liver disease. Overall, 369 inmates died in 2008, down 13.3 percent from 2006, according to the report, which provides a glimpse of medical care inside California prisons. Since 2006, prison health care has been under the control of a federal receiver, after a judge ruled that California was providing inadequate care that led to the preventable deaths of about one inmate a week. Monday's report found that deaths that might have been prevented with medical care increased from 48 to 61 between 2006 and 2008. Read More. |
