| Federal agency to investigate what caused prison fire |

The federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives continues to investigate what caused a three-alarm blaze at the federal penitentiary in Atlanta Sunday night, an official with the agency said Tuesday morning. BATF will oversee the investigation. Once the cause of the fire has been determined, the agency will give that information to prison officials. The fire broke out in a housing unit shortly after 8 p.m. and was extinguished by 11:30 p.m. The extent of the damage has not been released. It is also not clear how many inmates were moved to another part of the prison and when they would be allowed to return. A spokesman for the prison was unavailable Sunday night and would not be able to answer questions until after 9 a.m., an official said Monday morning. Read More. |
