Few Thomson residents surprised — or opposed — to prison

Few residents appeared surprised by Tuesday's announcement that federal officials want to buy the Thomson Correctional Center and use it to house terrorism suspects.

The surprise may be that most in Thomson seem to support the proposal as a way to economically revive the struggling town of fewer than 600 residents tucked in the state's northwest corner.

"I've had a couple people against it, but I've had more support than I've had negative reactions,'' said Thomson Mayor Jerry "Duke'' Hebeler, who backs the sale of the prison to the federal government.

"I'm sure there are people here who are opposed to it, but they're very quiet,'' agreed Jon Whitney, a lifelong resident of the area and publisher of the local newspaper, Carroll County Review.

The maximum-security state prison was completed in 2001, but financial constraints meant it never has been fully occupied.
