CHICAGO — They saw mentally ill residents crowded three and four to a room, residents wandering hallways or playing bingo, and very little in the way of therapy. Members of an Illinois task force who visited nursing homes that house the mentally ill came away surprised and dismayed, some said at a meeting Wednesday. “I never knew there were that many mentally ill people in nursing homes. My eyes were opened,” said Roberta Fews of the state Department of Corrections. The task force, formed by Gov. Pat Quinn in response to a series of violent assaults in Illinois nursing homes, has been meeting since early October to find ways to improve safety.
