An associate warden in Calif. accused of failing to prevent a Folsom State Prison riot had previously befriended members of the inmate faction that started the melee, a newspaper reported last Sunday. The Sacramento Bee also reported that in 1992 Michael D. Bunnell was fired, although he was later reinstated, after investigators found his relationships with convicts at another prison crossed legal boundaries. Bunnell, who was an associate warden at Folsom during an April 2002 riot, has been accused of failing to stop the fights that injured 24 inmates and one officer. The injured officer is suing Bunnell, claiming he and two others orchestrated the attacks. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger wants the federal government to investigate the riot. Meanwhile, Bunnell remains an employee of the state Department of Corrections, though he is on paid leave after filing a worker's compensation claim earlier this year. |
