| Deputy black belt earns national recognition for tactical training |

HAMILTON — As a boy, Zane Nickell’s mother got her son involved in martial arts to develop discipline and get the “chubby” youth in better shape, according to the Butler County Sheriff’s corrections and training officer. It was the beginning of a hobby that turned to a passion and eventually into part of a vocation for Nickell. The 35-year-old Middletown resident now uses some of his skills from karate and ju-jitsu as a training instructor for the sheriff’s office and a corrections officer in the jail. Last month, Nickell was named Tactical Instructor of the Year by the Eastern U.S.A. International Martial Arts Association. “I am very humbled,” Nickell said last week while taking a break in a training session for a group of corrections officers. In addition to the national award, Nickell also is a member of the Black Belt Hall of Fame, is a master instructor with Taser International ASP Inc. and Response to Resistance Tactical Inc. While martial arts is often surrounded with mysticism, Nickell said he uses his training to teach officers the use of physiology and the central nervous system to gain control of a resistance situation without injury to anyone. Nickell said his father retired as a corrections officer at Lebanon Correctional Institution, so he aspired to a job in corrections. Read More. |
