SANTO DOMINGO – Authorities foiled a plot to start a prison riot at the penitentiary in Higuey, a city in the eastern Dominican Republic, as a cover for killing six inmates charged with drug trafficking, the press reported.

The six inmates are Carlos Gaviria, Alexander Vasquez, Oscar Rojas and Pedro Alonzo Gallo, all Colombians, Daniel Colorado, a Mexican, and Esteban Cedeño, a Dominican, the Diario Libre newspaper reported on its Web site, citing bureau of prisons officials.

The six inmates have been transferred to the prison in Najayo, the capital of the southern province of San Cristobal, Diario Libre said.
