The family of former Rutherford County (Tenn.) inmate Colby Cantrell claims his death could have been prevented. Colby Cantrell, 22, died while serving time at the Rutherford County jail last October. He was arrested for failing to pay fines associated with his probation. A few days later, his family says he started complaining of an earache. His family says Cantrell's condition got worse, causing him to have headaches, double vision, and nausea. At one point, they say he passed out in the jails dining hall, and was put back in his cell without getting medical aid. He died a few days later. An autopsy showed the cause to be bacterial meningitis. Now, his family has filed a lawsuit against the county, Sheriff Truman Jones, and others who work at the jail. They say if Cantrell had received the proper medical attention, he'd probably still be alive today. The county now has 20 days to respond to the federal lawsuit and 30 days for the state one. |
