CHARLOTTE, Tenn. - Two Dickson County jail inmates have been transferred to Riverbend Maximum Security Prison in Nashville. They are accused of splashing liquid bleach into the eyes of two sheriff's deputies and trying to escape. The male and female deputy have been treated at the hospital and released. "They was rushed, and overpowered," said Vance Bowker, chief deputy at the sheriff's department in Dickson County. "The keys and radios was taken from them, and the two inmates then attempted to escape the facility." Bowker said the two offending inmates are Tommy Jones, convicted of kidnap and rape; and Donald Davidson, charged with rape, aggravated assault and sexual assault. Davidson was still awaiting trial. The chief deputy said the two cell mates had been storing a liquid disinfectant in a styrofoam cup. Jail inmates are responsible for cleaning and sanitizing their own cells, but required to return any cleaning agent to prevent the chemicals from being used against jail staffers, as they were around 4 a.m. Tuesday. Bowker said when officers Jesse Stokes and Tina Wagner approached Jones's and Davidson's cell, to administer medication to a third cellmate; the two suspects assaulted the deputies, temporarily incapacitating them for a would-be escape. "They did an excellent job. I commend them," said Bowker. Bowker admitted constant danger is something officers keep in mind, and accept as part of the job. He said overcrowded conditions inside the Dickson County jail are only making things worse. The currently under construction jail expansion should wrap sometime in April. Read More. |
