Polk County sheriff's deputies on Wednesday arrested Joey Midgett on charges that he fatally shot Jonas Ward. Investigators said they interviewed Midgett, 38, of Lakeland, and he confessed to the murder. He faces charges of first-degree murder and armed burglary. Reports show Ward was shot to death while standing in the doorway of his Lakeland home on Tuesday. Ward's girlfriend told deputies she was in the bedroom when Ward walked to the front door of his home at 3:21 a.m. after hearing the doorbell. She later heard a gunshot and found Ward dead on the floor. Criminal history records from the Florida Department of Corrections shows that Ward was convicted of aggravated assault and interference with child custody in 2009 in Brevard County. He was sentenced to six years' probation. Details about that case were not immediately available. Ward also has several prior arrests in Polk County for traffic violations and one arrest for drug possession. Jail records show Midgett also has been behind bars. Deputies arrested him in August on charges of shooting into an occupied dwelling and assault with a deadly weapon, but those charges were dropped. Read More. |
