| Not close enough; Drug-filled ball fell short of prison yard |

A drug-filled tennis ball that didn't quite make it over two prison fences resulted in charges against one St. Louis inmate and two outside conspirators. The plan to smuggle heroin and marijuana into the Mid Michigan Correctional Facility in October fell apart when the tennis ball lay between two fences at the level 1 prison. It was soon spotted by corrections officers, Gratiot County Prosecutor Keith Kushion said. The inmate, Kevin Danneffel Jr., 28, has pleaded guilty to a 20-year felony. He had been serving time for unlawfully driving away a vehicle and breaking and entering and could have been released as early as October of this year, according to Michigan Department of Corrections website. One of his coconspirators included his sister, Heather Danneffel, 25, of Wyoming. She was scheduled for a preliminary hearing last month, but absconded on bond and a warrant has been issued for her arrest, Kushion said. Heather's boyfriend, Curtis DeShone Baker, 36, also of Wyoming, however, did appear for his preliminary examination late last month and was ordered to stand trial in Gratiot County Circuit Court, Kushion said. Baker has been charged with conspiracy to bring contraband into a prison and with one count each of attempting to smuggle heroin and marijuana into the prison. He has also been charged as a habitual offender and could face a maximum penalty of life in prison, Kushion said. The drugs placed inside the tennis ball would have been worth about $1,000 inside the prison, he said.
