A state jail inmate was captured last Thursday after escaping briefly from a work detail in Harris County, Texas. Several nearby schools were placed in lockdown as officials searched for the escaped prisoner. John William Coleman, 24, serving a one-year sentence for theft from Harris County, was found by tracking dogs in a wooded area about two hours after he was seen sprinting away from his groundskeeping job outside the Lychner State Jail near Humble, just northeast of Houston, Texas Department of Criminal Justice spokeswoman Michelle Lyons said. Humble Independent School District locked down three campuses while authorities searched for Coleman. North Belt Elementary, Whispering Pines Elementary and Humble Middle School were placed in lockdown for more than one hour around 9 a.m. Officials released the lockdown just before 11 a.m. Coleman was imprisoned last Dec. 17 and was scheduled for release Oct. 11. Now he faces charges of escape, a third-degree felony that could get him two to 10 years in prison, Lyons said. |
