Rapist still on the run

A convicted rapist is on the run after breaching his parole conditions in Christchurch.

Police say there are risks to the public, given his history.

While police are calling for Maka Renata to give himself up, others want a law change to keep dangerous criminals locked up for longer.

Renata, 24, was released from prison last month and paroled to a Christchurch address. But he has been at large since December 23.

Det Snr Sgt Virginia le Bas says there have been reports of sightings in Auckland and Christchurch, but still wants anyone who thinks they see him to contact police.

"Maka has a history of some sexual offending," she says. "He's been in custody for a considerable amount of time. There's an implied risk there, given his history."

That "history" includes raping a woman when he was just 14 years old. In 1999, Renata and his foster carer, Dean Hiroki, attacked a 26-year-old woman as she walked down Wellington's Cuba St, and raped her in an alleyway at knife point.

While serving a jail term for this rape, Renata sodomised his 15-year-old cellmate and best friend, earning him three more years in prison.

The Parole Board says the board had no discretion about whether to release Renata last month. Renata had completed his full 10 years and six months sentence after the Corrections Department intervened and prevented an early release.

But the Sensible Sentencing Trust says a law change is needed to keep people like Renata in prison.
