GARDEN CITY - The search ended Thursday for a man who escaped from the Kearny County Jail in October, as law enforcement officials captured Mitchell Ebihara Jr. At about 1 p.m., Garden City police confirmed they had captured Ebihara Jr., 27, who was in custody in Kearny County on attempted first-degree murder, aggravated battery and two other felonies until he escaped. He had been spotted at several residences in Garden City and Finney County since Sunday. Authorities set up a search perimeter Wednesday near Lee Richardson Zoo and south to the bed of the Arkansas River, hoping to contain Ebihara. Ebihara had been seen Tuesday night at a house in the 100 block of North Fourth Street. Officers responded to the residence at 9:25 p.m. and have been on the hunt for Ebihara ever since. He reportedly left the Fourth Street residence heading southeast. Ebihara escaped from the Kearny County Jail Oct. 12, 2009, after overpowering Kearny County corrections officer Mirna Saenz, who was transporting Ebihara to his cell after going to the jail library. Saenz was treated and released for minor injuries. He was wanted in February 2009 in connection with the Jan. 30, 2009, shooting of Ricardo Lopez, Lakin, who was hospitalized due to extensive injuries, Kearny County law enforcement officials said.
