Ribbon cutting murphy freud The Wyoming Department of Corrections (WDOC) officially opened the Wyoming Medium Correctional Institution (WMCI) in Torrington Wednesday, January 6, with a ribbon cutting ceremony attended by Governor Dave Freudenthal, Secretary of State Max Maxfield, numerous legislators, local officials, WDOC staff, and other invited guests.

The keynote speakers for the grand opening ceremonies were Governor Freudenthal and Director Bob Lampert. Director Lampert laid out the history of the siting, design and purpose of the newly constructed facility. "We will be able to better provide high-quality correctional services based on evidence-based practices while recognizing the importance of family and communities in the rehabilitation process," he said. Director Lampert noted that the new facility will also allow Wyoming to better serve its inmate population by housing all Wyoming inmates in-state.

Governor Freudenthal agreed that the facility will play an important role as the WDOC continues to offer substance abuse treatment, education and meaningful work for inmates. He admitted that these practices should not only help keep inmates from returning to prison, but will also assist Wyoming to live within its budget by better preparing these inmates to stay out of prison.

WMCI Warden Michael Murphy congratulated his staff for launching a state-of-the-art facility designed and constructed by DLR Group and Layton Construction. The WMCI will soon see the arrival of its first inmates.

The facility encompasses approximately 347,000 square feet, will employ 350 staff members and will house 700 medium security male inmates when full.

The public open houses and tours will be on Friday, January 8, starting at 1:00 p.m. to the last tour beginning at 8:00 p.m.; on Saturday, January 9, starting at 8:00 a.m. and the last tour will begin at 5:00 p.m.; and Sunday, January 10, starting at 1:00 p.m. to the last tour beginning at 5:00 p.m.
