Fredonia’s Western Kentucky Correctional Complex will be converted into a women’s prison by July, Gov. Steve Beshear announced Friday.

All state female felony inmates currently housed at the Otter Creek Correctional Complex in Floyd County will be transferred to WKCC, located near Fredonia in Lyon County.

The all-male WKCC inmate population will be reassigned to other facilities in Kentucky, including Otter Creek.

Their destinations will be based on their level of custody, programming needs and proximity to their homes, Corrections officials said.

Corrections Commissioner LaDonna Thompson said the transition would not cause a reduction in the WKCC workforce.

WKCC staff members will undergo training to prepare for the transition. The plan will involve experienced staff members from the Kentucky Correctional Institution for Women working with WKCC staff on techniques for managing female offenders.

“I have been personally assured by the secretary of the Justice and Public Safety Cabinet and Commissioner Thompson that there will be no loss of jobs to any current employees or any relocation out of the area for employees,” State Rep. Mike Cherry said after Friday’s announcement.
