By Brandie Kessler, bkessler@pottsmerc.com One day after receiving letters from legislative and law enforcement officials urging a policy change in DNA collection from felons, the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections said it is reviewing its policies and procedures. A phone call to Jeffrey Beard, the secretary of the Department of Corrections, was referred to a spokeswoman in the press office Friday. Susan Bensinger, deputy press secretary for the state department of corrections, said the department of corrections was reviewing its policies and procedures with regard to the collection of DNA samples from convicted felons. As the policy stands, Bensinger said, the collection of DNA samples from convicted felons, which is state law, occurs "during their incarceration period." There is no policy for when exactly the sampling must be completed, just that it happens during the convicted felon's incarceration period. Bensinger explained inmates have many "intakes," especially those who come into the Department of Corrections system while still having court hearings they must be present for. Read More. |
