Inmate gets death in prison stabbing

"He won't be able to kill anybody else."
That was Barbara Steed's reaction to the death sentence handed down this week to inmate Steven L. Hugueley, the man who killed her brother Delbert Steed and a man already serving two life sentences when he stabbed the prison counselor inside the Hardeman County Correctional Facility last year.

Barbara Steed, 63, attended both days of Hugueley's first-degree murder trial in Hardeman County Circuit Court. Her brother, who lived in Jackson, was stabbed in the back multiple times with an ice pick-like instrument, corrections officials said following the January 2002 incident at the Whiteville prison.
"Justice was done in this case," said Elizabeth Rice, district attorney for 25th Judicial District.

Any first-degree cases automatically go through an appeal process when someone files a notice of appeal, Rice said. Then the case goes to Court of Criminal Appeals and the State Supreme Court, she said.

Hugueley, in his mid-30s, was tried Monday and Tuesday, said Linda Fulghum, Hardeman County Circuit Court clerk. Hugueley had a history of violent attacks while in prison and bounced around between medium- and maximum-security prisons. His attorney could not be reached for comment.
"We're happy and glad that he got the death sentence," said sister Bonnie Steed, 49.
