| Correction Workers Protest Budget Cuts |

Budget cuts in Iowa could have some left out in the cold before long. Right now, about fifty Iowa correctional counselors are set to lose their jobs because Gov. Culver ordered a 10% cutback on statewide spending. On Saturday, those counselors rallied outside the Anamosa Penitentiary in a last-ditch effort to save their jobs. "We want to let people know about the effects of the 10% cuts on the prisons," says corrections counselor Jason Hute. "12 of our counselors are going to be laid off, which is about 55% of our social services and treatment departments," says Jamie Sprimont, a corrections counselor at Anamosa Penitentiary. With fewer counselors, Sprimont says the Department of Corrections won't be able to help nearly as many inmates. Because of that, it's likely some prisoners won't be able to receive the treatment they need, something some say could put the public at risk. Read More. |
