| Jail project aims at sewing profits |

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - A new move to save money and make money at the Metropolitan Detention Center would mean a whole lot of sewing for inmates. The plan is to turn a section of the jail into a sewing circle for profit. It's being proposed by the Bernalillo County’s Public Safety Department and is sponsored by County Commissioner Michael Wiener. “We're looking for ways to be more cost effective and more efficient on how we manage our jail facility,” Bernalillo County Public Safety Director John Dantis said. The items on the sewing list are mattresses, pillows, linens and jail uniforms. Every year, those items cost taxpayers $300,000. So instead of inmates lounging around, they'll be working. In the first year, Dantis projects the program could supply the jail with needed items while saving the county $150,000. By the second year, he said the small project could become big business.
