You're Paying Warden $9,500/mo To Not Work

CAÑON CITY – You're paying a Cañon City warden $9,569 each month to not show up to work. Ron Leyba, warden of Four Mile Correctional Center in Cañon City was put on paid administrative leave on April 23rd. The Department of Corrections won't confirm what is being investigated. From May through December, Leyba made $76,552 and never went to work. His annual salary is $114,828.

NEWSCHANNEL 13: "Do you believe it's a waste of taxpayer money for someone to be on paid administrative leave for seven months, getting paid to be at home?"

"It depends. They have a due process right, so part of that due process is collecting as much information as you can. It's not trying to get to the wrong answer quickly, it's about taking the time to make sure that you exhaust everybody's rights and that you get to the right answer, whenever that's possible," said Department of Personnel and Administration Director Rich Gonzales. "There's not a rule about how long you can be on administrative leave, it depends on individual circumstances. "What there is, is a 20-day rule."

Twenty working days came and went in May.
