MEDIA RELEASE –Stabbing Occurred at the Indiana State Prison Michigan City, Indiana- (January 15, 2009) – Indiana State Prison Superintendent Mark Levenhagen reports that a stabbing occurred on January 15, 2010 at 8:50 a.m. on the 200 range of D Cell House East Side. At 8:50 am a signal 3000 (Medical Emergency) was called due to offender Jeffrey Carter, DOC 943400, age 48, being found with stab wounds. He was taken to the Medical Services Unit at the Indiana State Prison and transported to St. Anthony Hospital by ambulance with three stab wounds to his back. The facility was notified at 10:16 a.m. that offender Carter had died. Several potential suspects have been identified but are not being named at this time as investigation of the incident continues. The investigation has been turned over to Indiana State Police Detectives and Crime Scene Technicians and the LaPorte County Coroner’s office has been notified. Offender Jeffrey Carter was serving 2 felony sentences from Marion County. He was serving 55 years for Attempt to Commit Murder and 1 year for possession of a handgun without a permit. The sentences were running concurrently. His earliest possible release date was March 28, 2024.
