Outdated and unclear information on South Dakota's sex offender registry makes it difficult for the public to determine which offenders are dangerous, critics say. The registry - at http://sor.sd.gov/ - went online in 2006 to help people know whether sex offenders live in their neighborhood. But some offenders' convictions listed on the registry don't match up to current law, and the registry's entries are steeped in legal jargon. That limits its effectiveness, critics say. Rep. Jacqueline Sly, R-Rapid City, serves on the legislative committee that last year examined possible changes to the state's sex offender registration laws. She said the online registry "doesn't always tell if we should be really worried if someone is living in our neighborhood." The legislative committee unanimously approved eight proposals to be introduced in this year's Legislature. The most talked-about piece of legislation would divide registered offenders into three categories based on the seriousness of their crimes, but none of the proposed legislation would solve the problems that stem from the registry's use of language.
